John Angel Hooper was commissioned as Captain of Company E 8th Battalion of Infantry on September 23, 1861.  Company E was raised in Gordon Coyunty, Georgia and was known as Freeman’s Volunteers. Captain Hopper and the company served coastal defense duty until being sent west in May of 1863. He died of fever in Yazoo during the movement to relieve Vicksburg on June 11, 1863.  He is thought to have been buried somewhere in Mississippi.
