Calvin had a head stone with the following inscriptions: “Fired the first shot at Ft. Sumpter”.  A Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce publication states that he is alleged to have been in a battery that firsd on Fort Sumter.  

The following is found at his Find A Grave Memorial:

Fought for the CSA during the Civil War. 1st SC infantry (regulars)Butlers - also known as the Third SC Heavy Artillery. Enlisted in Spartanburg, SC and served on South Carolina coastal defense through most of the war. Fought at the Battle of Bentonville, NC a few weeks before the end of hostilities.

Married Harriett Brannon after the war and moved towards Rome, Georgia which was under a smallpox quarantine at the time. Went around Rome and settled in Cherokee County, Alabama and became a farmer. Allegedly was a member of the battery that fired the first shot on Ft. Sumter (Cherokee County Historical Society)

Abbott Cemetery

Abbott Cemetery

Robert Ambrose Abbott was a member of Company K of the 3rd Georgia Calvary. he enlisted in the army with a horse valued at 200 dollars in 1862. He died at Camp Randolph in Calhoun....not far from his home. 

 

Armstead Ambrose Abbott enlisted in the Confederate Army on May 7, 1862. He was a member of the Calhoun Blues, Company D, 40th Georgia Infantry Regiment. A.A. Abbott was captured at Champion Hill on May 17, 1863 and was a prisoner of war at Fort Delaware. At some point prior to 1864 he was paroled. He rejoined the army and was captured again at Atlanta on August 13, 1864. He spent time at as a POW at Louisville, Kentucky, Camp Chase, Ohio, and Point Lookout, Maryland. Here he took the oath of allegiance and was released on June 22, 1865.

Col.J.T. McConnell was killed at Missionary Ridge on November 24, 1863. He rode out in front of his regiment seeking the best placement of the regiment. He was shot in the head and killed. – No. 245 Report of Brig. Gen. Cumming, OR Vol. 31 Part II

He was elected Colonel of the 39th on March 2, 1862. It is reported that he died of his wounds on December 1, 1863. Captain Blackwell was elected 1st Lieutenant of Company H 8th Georgia Infantry December 3 1861. He mustered out of the service May 1862. On May 14 he was elected Captain of Company D of the 34th Georgia. On February 2, 1864 a twenty-seven year old William R Garrett volunteered his services as a blacksmith to the US Army in Chattanooga, Tennessee.  He was assigned to Company H of the 12th Tennessee Calvary of the US Army.  He served as company blacksmith and farrier. There is also a U.S. Army pension record for a William R. Garrett  of Company H 12th Tennessee Calvary that died December 4, 1926.
