  2. Confederate soldiers are automatically recorded if they are marked with a VA tombstone.
  3. Service of those marked with a Confederate flag or Southern Cross of Honor is are recorded if their service records can be established.
  4. Soldiers whose service is described in their Find a Grave memorial are recorded if the information given can be corroborated.

This is a survey of Fraternal Cemetery in Pratt City using the Find A Grave memorial page for the cemetery. The cemetery page contains 2950 memorials and 55 % have been photographed.

Description of Cemetery: At the beginning of the 20th century, the Greenwood Cemetery, formerly known as the Sam Foley Cemetery, adjoined the Pratt Mines Cemetery which was also called the United Mine Workers Cemetery. The combined cemeteries are now known as the Fraternal Cemetery, which is owned by the Fraternal Order of Pratt City. The newer section, originally called the Pratt Mines Cemetery, includes about 13 acres. The older section, known as the Greenwood Cemetery, covers about 1.5 acres and includes about 200 graves on the southwest corner of the lot. The Greenwood Cemetery is in the thick woods to the left of the main entrance. These cemeteries include the graves of English, Scottish, and German immigrants who worked in the Pratt coal mines and other early 20th century industrial operations in this area. (Find A Grave)

From webpage:

Major Joseph Barbiere's Cavalry Battalion was organized in 1864 from several independent companies which had themselves been created as supporting forces for the Conscript Reserves. The battalion served principally in central Alabama during the fall and winter, 1864-1865, and it was first assigned (1 Nov 64) to Armistead's Cavalry Brigade, District of Central Alabama, until January 1865. The unit was headquartered at Wilsonville, AL (Feb 65) and was reported as serving with the Alabama Reserves with six companies ("A"-"F"). It was assigned to, and included in the surrender of the Department of Alabama, Mississippi and East Louisiana by Lt. Gen'l Richard Taylor at Citronelle, AL, on 4 May 1865
Barbiere's Cavalry Battalion consisted of Companies "A"-"E" (probably Capt. John C. Brown's, Capt. J. M. Clifton's, Capt. Dawson's, Capt. Thomas J. Goldsby's, and and Capt. Thomas K. Truss' companies), "F" (Capt. Andrew W. Bowie's), and "G" (Capt. P. L. Griffitts)

Brewersville Cemetery

I visited this cemetery back in the early 1980’s when I was trying to locate the graves of CSA soldiers in back roads of west Alabama. I would naturally record the standard CSA markers and those tombstones that identified the man as a Confederate soldier. I would also record the name and vitals of the men born between 1810 and 1848. I would then search for these men in company rosters, regimental accounts, and other sources.

I have chosen to preserve the original formatting that I used in the 1980’s. Unfortunately, I did not record complete dates of birth and death, so the vital information is somewhat lacking. In the case of unit designations determined by research I have included footnotes of the sources.

The cemetery locations are as I originally described them. I will also use coordinates from the GNIS database when I feel comfortable that it applies. I do not have pictures as this was also the pre-digital age.
