Berry enlisted in 1862 and served in engagements at Shiloh, Corinth, Baton Rouge, and Port Hudson. He was wounded at Port Hudson in the heal and never returned to the army.

Pvt. P.J. Busbin enlisted are March 10, 1862. He was captured at Chelbyville, Tennessee on June 27, 1863 and sent to Louisville, Kentucky and then to Camp Chase, Ohio in July. On July 14, 1863 he was transferred to Fort Delaware. In October he was sent south to Point Lookout, Maryland.  After arrival he was admitted to Hammond General Hopstial with Scarlatina (scarlet fever). He died October 31, 1863.

The marker is a cenotaph as he was buried at Point Lookout.
