The marker on the side of US 41 had an incorrect date of birth. Elias Whiddon was actually born in 1817. He served in the Second Seminole War. Pate identified Whiddon as a man that did not support Secession. He felt that the Union should be preserved.
Elias and Nancy had two sons who joined a company of the 7th Georgia State troops which became Company F of the 59th Georgia Infantry. Lott died in General Hospital of typhoid pneumonia on October 25, 1862. John D. was killed May 31, 1864 near Cold Harbor in Virginia.
Late in the war Elias joined the state militia. He was sent home sick with the measles. Nancy contracted the disease and died October 10, 1864. Three months later Elias succumbed to the measles.
