Henry was the Confederate postmaster at Gum Springs.

Hud York, Larkin York, and Jasper York were the sons of Josiah Cowan York & Sarah Virginia Blake. They enlisted in Company A of the 1st Georgia Calvary which was commanded by their brother William Thomas York. William was killed at Battle of Peachtree Creek in 1864.

Albert enlisted in western Tennessee in 1864. In October of 1864 a calvary skirmish occurred near the hamlet of Van Wert in Polk County, Georgia. Albert was in the line of battle and was killed near the church and was buried in the cemetery.

Dalton Confederate Cemetery and West Hill Cemetery

There are 421 unknown Confederate soldiers buried in the Confederate Cemetery section of West Hill Cemetery in Dalton. Dalton was a hospital center for southern troops from 1862 to 1864. The hospitals were moved deeper into Georgia in the face of the May 1864 Federal advance on Atlanta. 

There is a large moment to dead thought to be buried in the section.

Holland Lacewell enlisted in Jackson, Tennessee in May of 1861. Most of his known service is as a waggoner. In April of 1864 the 9th Tennessee was position somewhere around Dalton in preparations for the impending defense of Atlanta. It is likely that Holland died of disease or accident.

1839-1962


Wyly was the son of Richard and Mary Jane Gaines. He enlisted in Captain J.F. Leak’s Company of Morrison’s Regiment at Camp Morrison in Bartow County on May 1, 1862. This organization became Company G, 1st Georgia Calvary. He died at home on July 17, 1862.

Efford E. Gaines 
1837-1887

Efford was also a child of Richard and Mary Jane Gaines. He enlisted in Captain Saxon’s Company at Cassville on August 4, 1863. This mounted infantry company was mustered in for the defense Georgia west of the Chattahoochee. It subsequently became known as Company D of the 10th Battalion of Calvary, Georgia State Guards. It appears that this company was stationed at Cassville and mustered out of the service in February of 1864.

John R. Sewell enlisted at Grantville in Coweta County, Georgia on July 12, 1861. He was wounded at Garnett’s Farm or Malvern Hill in 1862. He spent time in General Hospital #13 in Richmond, Virginia. He returned to duty on September 2, 1862.  Sick again in May he was in Chimborazo Hospital in Richmond for several days with debility (weakness or feebleness). He listed as killed in action casualty in Bennings Brigade on June 20, 1864. This would be during the siege of Petersburg. His date of death given on his tombstone would match up with the Battle of Cold Harbor

William Jefferson Culpepper military record is for service in Company F of the 17th Texas Calvary. He was killed in the Battle of Mansfield, Louisiana He was killed in a cavalry charge.  In an earlier charge he was knocked down by a ball to the chest that was stopped by his Bible. He is thought to be buried on the battlefield.

John Wesley Culpepper enlisted in Meriwether County Georgia on May 18, 1861. He was elected 2nd Lieutenant of Company D on January 126, 1862. His records suggest that at some point he was commanding the company with his Lieutenant rank. He was killed at the Battle of  Mill in Henrico County, Virginian on August 16, 1864. He died in the arms of his brother Simeon. Simeon buried him near the battlefield.

There are no Lamberts on the role of Company B of the 55th Alabama. However the next three Lamberts in Company B of the 55th Alabama do appear on the rolls of Company B 5th Alabama Battalion.  Seth Lambert does not show up on any 5th Alabama Battalion roll. This company was raised in Calhoun County, Alabama.

They will be recorded with the inscription on the stones in Hebron Cemetery.

Private Lambert enlisted in Captain Bush’s Calhoun County (Alabama) Sharpshooters on August 19, 1861.  This would become Company B of the 5th Alabama Infantry Battalion.
He appears as missing in action muster rolls after Gettysburg. Union records indicate that he was captured at Gettysburg on July 3, 1863. He is detained at Fort McHenry, Maryland and eventually sent to Fort Delaware.  He died of chronic diarrhea only October 6, 1863. Military records indicate that Chandler was wounded the leg in Virginia and spent some time in Howard’s Grove General Hospital in Richmond. He was transferred the General Hospital in Athens, Georgia in June and died at the Kingston Hospital. Col.J.T. McConnell was killed at Missionary Ridge on November 24, 1863. He rode out in front of his regiment seeking the best placement of the regiment. He was shot in the head and killed. – No. 245 Report of Brig. Gen. Cumming, OR Vol. 31 Part II

He was elected Colonel of the 39th on March 2, 1862. It is reported that he died of his wounds on December 1, 1863. Captain Blackwell was elected 1st Lieutenant of Company H 8th Georgia Infantry December 3 1861. He mustered out of the service May 1862. On May 14 he was elected Captain of Company D of the 34th Georgia.
