Unknown Confederate Dead
Here sleep, known but to God, approximately one hundred and fifty Confederate solders, most of whom died from disease, or wounds in the Confederate hospitals that were located near this spot. Some where killed in a skirmish with Federal raiders near here on July 19, 1864.
Although Federal troops raided and burned part of this city, Confederate hospitals were not molested. Brave and gallant Confederate women rendered valuable aid in caring for soldiers in Confederate hospitals here and elsewhere. 044-42A

Presley enlisted in 1861 Murphy’s Guards of Wrights Legion. This company became  Company D of the 38th Georgia. He was captured at Fredericksburg and paroled for exchange change. He was killed in action at Spotsylvania Court House in Virginia on May 12, 1864.

His grave site is unknown and his name isn't recorded among the confederate dead buried in the Spotsylvania Confederate Cemetery.

After the war, his wife Nancy raised the couple's six dependent children and applied for and received a state pension for her husband's service. An inscription honoring Presley Lanier is carved on the back of Nancy Lanier's grave stone at Stone Mountain Cemetery, DeKalb Co., GA.

John R. Sewell enlisted at Grantville in Coweta County, Georgia on July 12, 1861. He was wounded at Garnett’s Farm or Malvern Hill in 1862. He spent time in General Hospital #13 in Richmond, Virginia. He returned to duty on September 2, 1862.  Sick again in May he was in Chimborazo Hospital in Richmond for several days with debility (weakness or feebleness). He listed as killed in action casualty in Bennings Brigade on June 20, 1864. This would be during the siege of Petersburg. His date of death given on his tombstone would match up with the Battle of Cold Harbor

William J Culpepper

William Jefferson Culpepper military record is for service in Company F of the 17th Texas Calvary. He was killed in the Battle of Mansfield, Louisiana He was killed in a cavalry charge.  In an earlier charge he was knocked down by a ball to the chest that was stopped by his Bible. He is thought to be buried on the battlefield.

John Wesley Culpepper enlisted in Meriwether County Georgia on May 18, 1861. He was elected 2nd Lieutenant of Company D on January 126, 1862. His records suggest that at some point he was commanding the company with his Lieutenant rank. He was killed at the Battle of  Mill in Henrico County, Virginian on August 16, 1864. He died in the arms of his brother Simeon. Simeon buried him near the battlefield.
