On February 2, 1864 a twenty-seven year old William R
Garrett volunteered his services as a blacksmith to the US Army in Chattanooga,
Tennessee. He was assigned to
Company H of the 12th Tennessee Calvary of the US Army. He served as company blacksmith and
farrier. There is also a U.S. Army pension record for a William R. Garrett of Company H 12th Tennessee Calvary
that died December 4, 1926.
