William J. Martin was an 18 year old student in Alexandria who enlisted on March 1, 1862 as a member of Company D "The Alexandria Rifles" of the 10th Alabama Infantry regiment.  At the Battle of Sharpsburg or Antietam the 10th Alabama was in Wilcox's Brigade of R.H.
