Margaret Rice in 1896 stated that her deceased husband Adam M. Rice was a private in Captain Millsap’s Company of Alabama Cavalry. This company was a part of Davenport’s Battalion.

John W. Cline of Sullivan’s Branch, Cheatham County, Tennessee was a member of the Union 10th Tennessee. 

There are 23 cenotaphs located in the new section of this cemetery. These VA Confederate headstones were put up for those soldiers buried in the Alpine Cemetery that did not have a military marker.

William enlisted in Summerville June 12, 1861 as a member of the Chattooga Volunteers company. He served as an ordinance teamster in early 1863. He died of disease in Petersburg, Virginia on May 12, 1863.

Lieutenant King entered the service as a private in May of 1862. He served until March of 1864 when he resigned as he had been elected the Chattooga County Receiver of Taxes in January.

John Montgomery enlisted in the service on March 4, 1862. He was killed or wounded on April 29, 1862 at Bridgeport. There is a record of  John Montgomery dying at the Newson Hospital in Chattanooga, Tennessee on May 2 1862 and of his father claiming his effects. In Bridgeport there a marker for John Montgomery II whose was killed April 29, 1862 in Battle of Bridgeport.

James Aldophus Neal was a private in Company B of the 9th Georgia Infantry. On October 18, 1861 he was admitted to Chimborazo Hospital #2 in Richmond, Virginia with Typhoid Fever. James died on the 5th of November.

This cemetery is in a large pasture west of the highway. I could not secure permission to cross the fence line. This is a Find A Grave Survey.

John Milton Lawrence Cenotaph

"This marble minstrels voiceless stone in deathless song shall tell, When many a vanished year has flown, the story where he fell."

John enlisted in Company E of the 37th Georgia Infantry on May 20, 1863 at Danielsville, Georgia. He spent time in to the Ocmulgee Hospital in Macon during September and October of 1863 with dropsy. On October 28, 1864 he was captured in Decatur, Alabama during Hoods push to attack the Union rear in Nashville. He was sent north to a Louisville, Kentucky and then to the military prison at Camp Douglas, Illinois. John M. Lawrence died at Camp Douglas on February 4, 1865 of pneumonia and was buried in grave #683, Block 2, Chicago City Cemetery.

John's father, mother, and two younger brothers are buried in the cemetery.  The brothers died in 1862.

Col.J.T. McConnell was killed at Missionary Ridge on November 24, 1863. He rode out in front of his regiment seeking the best placement of the regiment. He was shot in the head and killed. – No. 245 Report of Brig. Gen. Cumming, OR Vol. 31 Part II

He was elected Colonel of the 39th on March 2, 1862. It is reported that he died of his wounds on December 1, 1863. Captain Blackwell was elected 1st Lieutenant of Company H 8th Georgia Infantry December 3 1861. He mustered out of the service May 1862. On May 14 he was elected Captain of Company D of the 34th Georgia. North Harrison White enlisted in Company I on September 25, 1861. He was reported in January and February of 1862 as a patient in a hospital in Dufries, Virginia. In March and April he was reported sick in Richmond. White was killed at Jericho Ford, Virginia.

John Milton Curry enlisted in Company F on August 1, 1863. He was enlisted by a Colonel Culberson in Chattooga County, Georgia. He was paid 48.80 for the use of his horse. Nothing else was found about him. There are records of a John Curry being captured and paroled after the date of death.
