The NARA cards for Sergeant Ross are very hard to read. He enlisted September 18, 1861. He died in Atlanta, Georgia. His father filed for his effects in early 1865. An entry for him in the U.S., Civil War Soldier Records and Profiles, 1861-1865, states that he was wounded in the chin at Chickamauga, mustered out of the service on August 1, 1864 due to death.

William was captured at the surrender of Vicksburg in 1863.  He was paroled July 9 and at some point he rejoined his regiment.  He was in the line in June of 1864 in the defense of Atlanta. It is reported in a report of the Adjutant and Inspector Generals office that he was killed in battle on August 11, 1864. There was not a general engagement on this date. General Alexander P. Stewart reports that the division (the 37th was in Alpheus Brigade of Stewarts Division) was in line from the Marietta Road to west of Lick Skillet Road and nothing major happened except for constant skirmishing. Perhaps William was killed in the daily pot shots or daily probes that occur along a siege line.

Thomas shares a tombstone with his wife Tampa. He was born in 1832 and died March 22, 1863. His epitaph is as follows: Died on the field of battle. Twas noble thus, to die. God smiles on valiant soldiers, on high.

Thomas enlisted in Captain Smith’s company of Hilliard’s Legion in May of 1862 at the age of 30. This company subsequentially became Company C of the 3rd Battalion of Hillard’s Legion. He served until his death in Knoxville on March 21, 1863. The Legion was not engaged in March, so his death may have been sickness related.

In April of 2021 three documents pertaining to Captain Kirkpatrick were auctioned for 250 dollars by Cowans (see below).

Lot of 3 items
KIRKPATRICK, William E. ALS, Kirks Grove, Cherokee County, AL, Sept 23, 1865. To Andrew Johnson, U.S. President. "I was a Country Post Master under the old government & simply transferred myself to the service of the Confederate government when that ...went into operation." He goes on to request amnesty to rejoin the United States. At the bottom of the letter is a recommendation for this. Kirkpatrick seems to have been drafted later. He enlisted as Captain in the 19th AL Infy.

Signed Oath of Amnesty, 10 August 1865. This was apparently sent in with the other papers.

PARSONS, Lewis E. Provisional Governor of Alabama. LS by Lewis Parsons to Andrew Johnson stating that he has examined Mr. Kirkpatrick's application and is of the opinion that he "will prove a good and loyal citizen." on Executive Department of Alabama letterhead, Montgomery, 9 Nov. 1865.
