In Crook Cemetery there is a tombstone that was likely erected by the parents or family of William J. Martin.

The inscription:

In Memory of

William J. Martin

Son of Irvin and Annie Martin

Born Dec 18, 1844

A Confederate Solider Who Died

In the Battle of Sharpsburg, MD

Sept 17, 1862 and Sleeps In

Unknown Northern Grave.

William J. Martin was an 18 year old student in Alexandria who enlisted on March 1, 1862 as a member of Company D "The Alexandria Rifles" of the 10th Alabama Infantry regiment.  At the Battle of Sharpsburg or Antietam the 10th Alabama was in Wilcox's Brigade of R.H. Anderson's Division. The 10th was thrown into battle along the Sunken Road where they lost half their strength. This is where William was likely killed.
