William Edward Reneau appears to have transferred from a Mississippi regiment in 1862 to the 1st Tennessee Calvary which became the 12th Tennessee Cavalry, known as Green’s Calvary, in 1863. William was appointed 2nd Lieutenant in Company F on February 13, 1863.  Lieutenant Reneau on the staff of R.V. Richardson in Forrest’s Calvary as Assistant Inspector General. He was still doing business of the regiment as late as Jun of 1864 when he wrote a letter to a Colonel Johnson. His date of death is not clear. It has been reported that he died in the Battle of Shelbyville in 1863 and his military marker’s year of death is 1865.

In 1860 James M Downey and his wife Nancy lived in the 2nd District of Cherokee County, Alabama with nine children and James ninety year old mother. The four oldest of their children were boys: Ambrose F., John, William, and Joseph.  Ambrose served in Company E of the 19th Alabama Infantry with brothers John, William, and Joseph. Ambrose was captured at Missionary Ridge in 1863 and sent to Rock Island, Illinois. John enlisted September 25, 1861 in Huntsville.

John was wounded severely at the Battle of Stone River. He was later captured in Nashville in December of 1864 and was sent to Camp Douglass, Illinois.

Brother William died in service in 1863. I could not find service records.

Joseph was sick with rubeola at the Floyd House and Ocmulgee Hospitals in Macon in July of 1864. It is assumed that his disease proved fatal for young Joseph.

Captain Kirkpatrick of Kirks Corner served until 1862 when he resigned his commission.

In April of 2021 three documents pertaining to Captain Kirkpatrick were auctioned for 250 dollars by Cowans (see below).

Lot of 3 items
KIRKPATRICK, William E. ALS, Kirks Grove, Cherokee County, AL, Sept 23, 1865. To Andrew Johnson, U.S. President. "I was a Country Post Master under the old government & simply transferred myself to the service of the Confederate government when that ...went into operation." He goes on to request amnesty to rejoin the United States. At the bottom of the letter is a recommendation for this. Kirkpatrick seems to have been drafted later. He enlisted as Captain in the 19th AL Infy.

Signed Oath of Amnesty, 10 August 1865. This was apparently sent in with the other papers.

PARSONS, Lewis E. Provisional Governor of Alabama. LS by Lewis Parsons to Andrew Johnson stating that he has examined Mr. Kirkpatrick's application and is of the opinion that he "will prove a good and loyal citizen." on Executive Department of Alabama letterhead, Montgomery, 9 Nov. 1865.
