Three men are marked with the iron South Cross of Honor in this cemetery: William N. Garmary, John Wiley Adam Campbell, and Samuel Vance Price.

Samuel V. Price’s Find a Grave Memorial states that he served in Company H, 26th Georgia Infantry. There are no records of Price in National Archives Compiled Service records. For the 26th Georgia.  However, his name does appear the 26th Tennessee Infantry/1st Georgia Infantry Memorial on the Chickamauga battlefield. This company was captured at Fort Donelson and sent to the POW camp at Camp Douglas. Eventually it was exchanged and reorganized as a part of the First Georgia Infantry. Samuel was a member of Captain J.C. Gordon’s Company raised at Crawfish Springs, Georgia in April of 1861. The company traveled to Knoxville as a part of the 3rd East Tennessee Infantry and became Company H of the 26th Tennessee Infantry. Samuel name actually appears on a detachment of the 26th Tennessee whom escaped from Fort Donelson.

William Newton Garmany’s Find a Grave Memorial states that he served in Company E, 6th Battalion, Georgia State Guards. William enlisted in Captain J.C. Hall’s Company of Cuberson’s Battalion of Calvary for six months of local defense serve on August 1 1863. Captain hall’s company was designated Company E and Cuberson’s Battalion became known as the 6th Battalion of Calvary, Georgia State Guards.  Garmany provided his own horse and saddle valued at over 300 dollars.

John Wiley Adam Campbell’s Find a Grave Memorial states that he served in Company E, 39th Georgia Infantry. There are no records of Campbell in National Archives Compiled Service records nor does his name appear on a roster of this company found in Sartain’s History of Walker County, Georgia.

ROBERT LOGAN (Private). A grave marker in Old Summerhour Cemetery reads: Robert Logan, Pvt., Co. B, 4th Reg Ga Inf, C.S.A., Nov. 30, 1832 - Nov. 30, 1863. Although military service records were not found, the family history contains this information about his military service: Robert Logan, born about 1821, enlisted as Private, in Co. B, 4th Regiment Ga. Volunteers, CSA. He died of fever in an Atlanta, Georgia hospital November 30, 1863. These details are from Mary Ann (Moreland) Logan's application for a pension. County Census 1860, visitation #660, lists Robert Logan, age 37, wife Mary A., using post office at Hasslers Mills.

JOHN L. TRIMERER (2nd Sergeant). Service began August 1861. Company D, 22nd Ga Brigade, Wrights. Died of consumption at Norfolk, Virginia, 1862. Preceding was copied from records in Murray County Courthouse, with spelling of battles and place names corrected as needed and dates of engagements added. Military service records contain this information: J. L. Trimmier, enlisted as 2nd Sergeant, Company D, 22nd Ga. September 3, 1861. Died of disease at Norfolk, Virginia July 24, 1862. Although the body probably was never returned, this man has a grave marker in the Old Summerhour Cemetery near Eton, Georgia. Murray County Census 1860, visitation #904, lists John L. Trimerer, age 21, in household of M. T. And Rachel Trimerer using post officer at Upper Kings Bridge.

Col.J.T. McConnell was killed at Missionary Ridge on November 24, 1863. He rode out in front of his regiment seeking the best placement of the regiment. He was shot in the head and killed. – No. 245 Report of Brig. Gen. Cumming, OR Vol. 31 Part II

He was elected Colonel of the 39th on March 2, 1862. It is reported that he died of his wounds on December 1, 1863. Captain Blackwell was elected 1st Lieutenant of Company H 8th Georgia Infantry December 3 1861. He mustered out of the service May 1862. On May 14 he was elected Captain of Company D of the 34th Georgia. North Harrison White enlisted in Company I on September 25, 1861. He was reported in January and February of 1862 as a patient in a hospital in Dufries, Virginia. In March and April he was reported sick in Richmond. White was killed at Jericho Ford, Virginia.

John Milton Curry enlisted in Company F on August 1, 1863. He was enlisted by a Colonel Culberson in Chattooga County, Georgia. He was paid 48.80 for the use of his horse. Nothing else was found about him. There are records of a John Curry being captured and paroled after the date of death.
