John Angel Hooper was commissioned as Captain of Company E 8th Battalion of Infantry on September 23, 1861.  Company E was raised in Gordon Coyunty, Georgia and was known as Freeman’s Volunteers. Captain Hopper and the company served coastal defense duty until being sent west in May of 1863. He died of fever in Yazoo during the movement to relieve Vicksburg on June 11, 1863.  He is thought to have been buried somewhere in Mississippi. Calvin had a head stone with the following inscriptions: “Fired the first shot at Ft. Sumpter”.  A Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce publication states that he is alleged to have been in a battery that firsd on Fort Sumter.  

The following is found at his Find A Grave Memorial:

Fought for the CSA during the Civil War. 1st SC infantry (regulars)Butlers - also known as the Third SC Heavy Artillery. Enlisted in Spartanburg, SC and served on South Carolina coastal defense through most of the war. Fought at the Battle of Bentonville, NC a few weeks before the end of hostilities.

Married Harriett Brannon after the war and moved towards Rome, Georgia which was under a smallpox quarantine at the time. Went around Rome and settled in Cherokee County, Alabama and became a farmer. Allegedly was a member of the battery that fired the first shot on Ft. Sumter (Cherokee County Historical Society)

Enlisted in in Company F of the artillery battalion Wetumpka, Alabama  in 1861. Throughout the war he served in Company F and A. In April of 1864 the 1st Battalion of Artillery was stationed at Fort Morgan. On August 23, 1864 he was  captured  at Fort Morgan. He was sent to New Orleans where he spent time in hospital with dysentery before being and then to Elmira, New York as a prisoner of war. He died of pneumonia on November 10, 1864 and was buried in Grave 811. The marker at Socopatoy is a cenotaph. He is still buried in New York.

Orlando enlisted in 1861 in Montgomery. He was detached as bugler for General Wheeler’s escort December 13, 1862. In 1864 he was still attached to the escort with this duty. After the war he was a respected doctor in Tallapoosa County.

In the 1907 enumeration of Clay County veterans Andrew Jackson Reid of Childersburg reported that he enlisted in 1862 in  Company C of the 6th Georgia Calvary regiment. This regiment was a part of Wheeler’s Calvary.
