From Williams Find a Grave Memorial: An "Application for Headstone" dated 1/27/1933, in the Military Archives listing William J Garner of Co. K, 40th Regt GA Inf., buried at Cedartown, Polk County. His birth was listed as 2/22/1839 and his death date as 5/24/1864. Find-a-Grave index # 15012210.

There is a record of a W.J. Garner who enlisted at Buchanan, Georgia in 1862. He was a member of Company K of the 40th Georgia. He was captured at Vicksburg and paroled in 1863. A  W.J.  Garner was paroled in North Carolina in 1865.

Joseph was a private in Company F, 3rd Alabama Infantry. He enlisted in Chambers County, Alabama in 1862. He was captured on July 3, 1863 and spent the remainder of the war in Federal POW prisons.

He was a soldier in the Confederate Army and died (remaining text is below ground level)


James was a Sergeant in Company D of the 31st Georgia. This regiment was organized in Cusseta, Georgia in 1861 and served in Savannah. James joined Company D in Savannah in October 1861. In July of 1862 the regiment was brigaded under General Lawton in Virginia. Sergeant Jester was admitted to the University Hospital in Charlottesville, Virginia. On July 14 he died of febrile typhoides (typhoid fever).

William Edward Reneau appears to have transferred from a Mississippi regiment in 1862 to the 1st Tennessee Calvary which became the 12th Tennessee Cavalry, known as Green’s Calvary, in 1863. William was appointed 2nd Lieutenant in Company F on February 13, 1863.  Lieutenant Reneau on the staff of R.V. Richardson in Forrest’s Calvary as Assistant Inspector General. He was still doing business of the regiment as late as Jun of 1864 when he wrote a letter to a Colonel Johnson. His date of death is not clear. It has been reported that he died in the Battle of Shelbyville in 1863 and his military marker’s year of death is 1865.

A Private James P. Webb enlisted in Company C of the 7th Alabama Infantry  in Center, Alabama on March 29, 1861. By 1863 James P. Webb was in Company H of the 19th Alabama and was wounded in the battle at Murfreesboro and also at Chickamauga. His widows pension application states that he was wounded somewhere in Kentucky and at Murfreesboro. She states that he was killed near Atlanta in 1865 and in another document she states that it as was near Atlanta in 1864, which is more likely than 1865.

There are two military markers for on Isaacs grave. A flat footmarker shows him in the 47th Alabama.  A classic vertical and pointed headstone is inscribed 14th Alabama. His records indicate service in the 47th Alabama.

Isaac was wounded in the left arm in the 2nd Battle of  Manassas in August of 1862. For the next year he was carried on the company musters rolls as in the hospital. In August of 1863 he was noted as being detailed as a nurse in a Lynchburg, Virginia hospital. Issac apparent deserted while at Morristown, Tennessee in January, but returned to duty in the summer of 1864 and surrender with Lee at Appomattox on April 9, 1865.

John Davis Terrell was born and raised in Cherokee County, Georgia. He joined Company C of Philips Legion in 1862. He surrendered and was paroled at Hillsboro, North Carolina in 1865. John was enumerated in the 1907 Census of Confederate Soldiers living in Pocahontas, Alabama.
