William appears on a muster roll in May of 1861. A regimental return in June reports him sick in Winchester.  He died of disease in July and was buried in the Confederate Cemetery (Line 4, Lot158) in Lynchburg, Virginian.

It is believed that this is NC Williams on ann 1862 muster roll of Company A, 5th Alabama Cavalry. He enlisted in Moulton with a horse worth 210 dollars.

Jonathan died July 10, 1863 of typhoid fever at Academy Hospital in Chattanooga. The 58th Alabama was in Clayton’s Brigade during the Tullahoma Campaign and took part in the Hoover’s Gap engagement. In July Bragg retreated toward Chattanooga. During this time hospitals were established in Chattanooga. Jonathan’s name was not been found in Silverdale Confederate Cemetery or in the Chattanooga Confederate Cemetery.

Samuel’s mother was Almira Cole Feagin, wife of James Madison Feagin.  Samuel enlisted July 3, 1861 in Captain Isaac B. Feagin’s company. This was his uncle Isaac Bell Feagin’s company. At Cold Harbor the regiment lost 34 out of 412 men. However, this battle occurred on June 3rd when Grant attacked Confederates west of the Old Cold Harbor crossroads.  Samuel's records show the July 3 wounding and July15th death.

James Bryan enlisted in the Columbia Blues which was to become Company A of the 6th Alabama Infantry.  He was commissioned a second Lieutenant and appears to have served the regiment in a Commissary capacity.

James F. Harbin

James T. Hardin has a non-military headstone. His grave was marked with a Confederate flag on July 31, 2021. 

His wife Margaret E. Harbin applied for a military pension in 1904. She stated that he served in Company D of the 14th Regiment on the pension application. This is Company D of the 14th Georgia Infantry Regiment. James and Margaret moved from Cherokee County, Georgia to Marion County between 1870 and 1880. 

James enlisted in Company D in Calhoun, Georgia on August 27, 1862. In January of 1863 a medical examining board in Lynchburg, Virginia declared James incapable of performing the duties of a soldier due to a double inguinal hernia. They stated that he had been unfit for duty sixty days out of the past two months.

Thomas J. Beasley

Thomas J. Beasley has a non-military headstone. His grave was marked with a Confederate flag on July 31, 2021. 

In 1913 the State of Alabama Pension Bureau notified Thomas that he did not appear on any rolls of the 4th Alabama Calvary. In 1914 E.F. Tucker signed an affidavit stating that Thomas Beasley was a member of Company K of the 4th Alabama Calvary for two years. In 1915 and 1916 Thomas received U.S. Confederate pension payments.

In 1860 James M Downey and his wife Nancy lived in the 2nd District of Cherokee County, Alabama with nine children and James ninety year old mother. The four oldest of their children were boys: Ambrose F., John, William, and Joseph.  Ambrose served in Company E of the 19th Alabama Infantry with brothers John, William, and Joseph. Three of the brothers are buried or commemorated near their parents.

Ambrose was captured at Missionary Ridge in 1863 and sent to Rock Island, Illinois. John enlisted September 25, 1861 in Huntsville. 

John was wounded severely at the Battle of Stone River. He was later captured in Nashville in December of 1864 and was sent to Camp Douglass, Illinois. 

Brother William died in service in 1863. I could not find service records. 

Joseph was sick with rubeola at the Floyd House and Ocmulgee Hospitals in Macon in July of 1864. It is assumed that his disease proved fatal for young Joseph.
