From a cursory search it appears that Burnett enlisted in an independent cavalry company in Carrollton Georgia in 1862. In October of 1862 the 7th Cavalry Regiment was formed by consolidating the 4th North Carolina Battalion Partisan Rangers and seven independent Georgia cavalry companies. This unit was known as Claiborne’s Partisan Rangers.  This unit disbanded in 1864. Wesley B. Burnett ended the war at Appomattox with the 7th Georgia Infantry.
