Caffey enlisted in Lowndes County, Alabama on March 23, 1862. He was wounded at Chancellorsville. He was captured on July 3, 1863 at Gettysburg. Union records indicate that he moved around to various hospitals after the battle with a gunshot wound to the right arms that resulted in a fracture of the arm.
