Calvin had a head stone with the following inscriptions: “Fired the first shot at Ft. Sumpter”.  A Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce publication states that he is alleged to have been in a battery that firsd on Fort Sumter.

The following is found at his Find A Grave Memorial:

Fought for the CSA during the Civil War. 1st SC infantry (regulars)Butlers - also known as the Third SC Heavy Artillery. Enlisted in Spartanburg, SC and served on South Carolina coastal defense through most of the war. Fought at the Battle of Bentonville, NC a few weeks before the end of hostilities.

Married Harriett Brannon after the war and moved towards Rome, Georgia which was under a smallpox quarantine at the time. Went around Rome and settled in Cherokee County, Alabama and became a farmer. Allegedly was a member of the battery that fired the first shot on Ft. Sumter (Cherokee County Historical Society)
