I have been visiting cemeteries and locating the graves of Confederate soldiers most of my life. Since 2009 I have specifically cataloged Confederate soldiers that were marked as such in cemeteries I visit. I also record veterans from other wars and tombstones that really interest me. June 2021: I would love to know who visits this page and what did you think about the work. Please leave a comment or drop me a quick note (greg_green@bellsouth.net)

Confederate Dead
Cassville was the site of Confederate hospitals that were in service throughout most of the Civil War. Here are the graves of more than 340 Confederate soldiers. There are 347 (or 363 per another source) blank tombstones in 19 rows. Each row is headed with a standard Confederate VA vertical pointed shaft marker inscribed with the number of "Unknown Confederate Soldiers" in the row.
Captain Alex Winn Lieutenant Alex Costner, and W.M. Barrow have markers position in such a way that leads me to believe they were erected by family members that learned that their fate he resulted in their burial within their ground.
Positioned to the south of the graveyard is a tall memorial obelisk erected 1878 by the Ladies Memorial Association of Cassville.

John's grave was marked by a Confederate flag. He served in Company F of the 29th Alabama Infantry. He was captured on July 4, 1864 at Chattahoochee, Georgia. The 29th Alabama was a part of the Army of Tennessee on July 4, 1864 and was in position in Cobb County along the Chattahoochee River line. There was action along the line on this day and it is likely he was captured then. He was shipped to Nashville and then to Camp Douglas, Illinois.
