Panola United Methodist Cemetery
Note: In the 1980’s during a time I refer to as BM and BK (Before Marriage and Before Kids) I traveled the back roads of west Alabama in search of Confederate soldiers buried in the old cemeteries. This was also before the now ubiquitous GPS. I still have much of this information. I have decided that I would share as much of this information as possible since most likely my yet to be born grandchildren will have to throw it away many years down the road. The following are a couple of rules of the road that I will adhere to. In the BM and BK times I spent a great deal of time at night trying to identify the men buried in the cemeteries I visited that were marked with civilian tombstones on company rosters and in regimental accounts. However, in these postings you will find only those clearly marked as CSA. As far as locations go I will use the locations as I originally described them. I will also use coordinates from the GNIS database when I feel comfortable that it applies. I do not have pictures as this was also the pre-digital age. For this reason I retain the exact recording format as originally recorded.
Cemetery Location:
Sumter County Highway 34
Panola, Sumter County, Georgia
GNIS Coordinates (DMS) 32° 56’ 07” N - 088° 15’ 00” W
On USGS Topomap this cemetery is identified as Pleasant Grove Cemetery and the associated church is identified as Shady Grove Church. Another source identifies this cemetery as Shady Grove Protestant Methodist Church.
I remember walking in this cemetery early one Sunday morning and being given a tour of the old church by a little gray haired lady.

I have been visiting cemeteries and locating the graves of Confederate soldiers most of my life. Since 2009 I have specifically cataloged Confederate soldiers that were marked as such in cemeteries I visit. I also record veterans from other wars and tombstones that really interest me. June 2021: I would love to know who visits this page and what did you think about the work. Please leave a comment or drop me a quick note (greg_green@bellsouth.net)
