Daniel enlisted in Captain Fredrick's Company in the 10th Battalion of Georgia Infantry on March 4, 1862. This company became Company A in the 10th. He dealt with sickness throughout 1862 eventually be sent home sick. In February of 1863 he was back with his company in Virginia. On April 2, 1863 he was admitted to Chimborazo Hospital in Richmond, Virginia with diarrhea. There are several dates for his death at Chimborazo Hospital in the records and on his tombstone, but April 20 is the most often date listed for his death.
Daniel was the brother of the Aretus, William, and Edward Hicks. They served in the 4th Georgia Infantry. Their parents were John Jones Hicks and Elizabeth Clinton.
