William T. Black enlisted May 11, 1861 in Company K (Upson Guards) of the 5th Georgia Infantry. In this company served as second lieutenant and first lieutenant and adjutant. He was elected Colonel of the 5th Georgia Infantry in May of 1862. After Christmas of 1862 the Army of Tennessee faced off with Union forces around Murfreesboro in Middle Tennessee. Colonel Black and the 5th Georgia was brigaded with the 2nd Georgia Battalion of Sharpshooters, the 5th and 8th Mississippi Infantry regiments, Lumsden's Alabama Battery and Pritchard's Georgia Artillery. Brigadier John K. Jackson's Brigade was in command of this brigade that was a part of Breckingridge's Division. On the morning of December 31st Jackson's Bridge moved across Stone River and fell in line in support of Donaldson's as they advanced on the Union left near the Cowan place. Colonel Black's second in command Major Charles Daniels described Black's death:
Col. William T. Black, commanding in the late fight at Murfreesborough, while bravely and gallantly leading his regiment on the center of the enemy, fell, shot with a minie ball on the left side of the head near the top, about 1 p.m., December 31, 1862, and died at 10 p.m. same day.
It is said that in 1863 Black's regiment commanded erected a monument to his memory, in the Ellaville City Cemetery in Schley County. On the south side of the monument are inscribed these words; "In the battle of Murfreesboro, while gallantly leading his regiment in a charge, waving his brightly gleaming sword above him, and shouting 'onward, onward', he fell mortally wounded, and expired in the arms of victory."
