Jalah H. Williams

Co. G. 41st Ga. Infrantry

CSA

Civil War  1861-1865

He Walked His Mile

Jalah's service is very well documented in his Find a Grave Memorial:

Private Jalah Henderson Williams

A Native Son - by Richard Jesse (Source: The Campaign for Atlanta, William R. Scaife.

This "Native Son" is the ancestor of Valerie Stacks and her father, Clarence Stacks of Cullman. Jalah Henderson Williams enlisted in the Confederate Army at age 27 on August 1862 in Company G, 41st Georgia Infantry at Bridgeport, Tennessee. On April 11, 1863 Jalah was admitted to a hospitalo, with chronic diarrhea. Epidemics of this common disorder, virtually crippled the army. He was given a medical furlough in May 1863 to recuperate.

During the Atlanta Campaign, at the Battle of New Hope Church, the 41st, in Stovall's Georgia Brigade, was deployed in a defensive line, with other brigades, to delay Sherman's movements, to take Atlanta. Some brigades were able to entrench lightly and erect barricades, but the 41st in Stovall's in Stovall's Brigade was reluctant to entrench their position in the cemetery. At this battle, Jalah was wounded in the left hand and arm. For these wounds, he received a furlough home and was there when the army surrendered.

The 41st was organized in the fall of 1861, recruiting men from Cobb, Troup, Taylor, and Heard counties. This regiment surrendered at Vicksburg on July 4th, 1863. It was consolidated with the 40th and the 43rd Georgia Infantry and designated the 40th Infantry Battalion at Smithfield, North Carolina, on April 19, 1865.

The 41st fought at the following battles: Corinth, Perryville, Vicksburg, Champions Hill, Chattanooga, Atlanta Campaign, Rock Face ridge, Resaca, New Hope Church, Dallas, Kennesaw, Peach Tree Creek, Atlanta, Ezra Church, Atlanta Siege, Jonesboro, Edisto Railroad Bridge, Binnaker's Bridge, Orangeburg, and Bentonville.

Jalah later moved to Winston County, Alabama, where he drew a penion in 1891.
