Gilbert was present for the May and June 1862 muster roll.  It is reported that he died July 9, 1862 at Beaulieu on a record of the property of descended Confederate soldiers. Beaulieu was a plantation a sea island cotton planter John Schley. The plantation was located 12 miles below Savannah on the Vernon River. A battery was set up on the plantation. While there was sporadic action during this time in the area it is likely that Gilbert died of disease.
