Clarke served in the1st Florida Regiment, and 8th Florida Regiment as a Captain. Captain Clarke was promoted to Major on 2 Oct 1862, and was transferred to Field and Staff of the 8th Florida Infantry Regiment. He received a slight head wound at Fredericksburg, Virginia, 11 Dec 1862. Major Clarke was in command of the 8th Regiment when it surrendered at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, 9 Apr 1865.
