Gilbert Moss enlisted in Company D of the 8th Georgia Battalion of Inftranty on October 11, 1861. This regiment was organized in Savannah and remained on duty in that area until 1863. Gilbert was present for the May and June 1862 muster roll.  It is reported that he died July 9, 1862 at Beaulieu on a record of the property of descended Confederate soldiers. Beaulieu was a plantation a sea island cotton planter John Schley. The plantation was located 12 miles below Savannah on the Vernon River. A battery was set up on the plantation. While there was sporadic action during this time in the area it is likely that Gilbert died of disease.
